- Story Text: A man who stepped in to defend an Indian student in the Polish city of Wroclaw has been dubbed "a hero" and offered a trip to New Delhi in recognition of his actions.
Tomasz Pikus was standing at a tram stop in the city centre of Wroclaw in January when three men approached the student, who was also waiting nearby.
According to Pikus the three told the student to leave Poland and appeared ready to fight. When Pikus intervened, the three attacked him, causing injuries that led him to be taken to hospital.
As a result of the attack, Pikus has suffered hearing loss and is now undergoing rehabilitation to recover.
Pikus says he was moved to defend the victim because he had previously lived abroad in Sweden, where he sometimes faced discrimination because of his nationality.
India's Honorary Consul in Wroclaw and local businessman Kartikey Johri praised Pikus as a hero, and offered him a trip to New Delhi where he would receive a welcome as an honoured guest.
Johri, who has lived in Poland for nearly 30 years, has now travelled to India to arrange the visit. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
