Summary:Britain's Autumn election was the closest for over a century. When it became clear that the Labour Party had won, Conservative Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas Home left number ten Downing Street to offer his Government's resignation to the Queen. It was the end of thirteen years of Conservative rule. Mr Harold Wilson became the new Prime Minister with a majority of only five.
