- Story Text:Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto found a novel way to launch his band's new album 'America' - by traveling from the East to the West Coast of the United States in a period of five days.
Starting in New York on Monday April 2, Leto used "planes, trains and automobiles" to make his way across to Los Angeles- even at times hitchhiking and getting on a Greyhound bus, but all the time performing his songs.
"I'm just out of my mind, you know. Completely lost it," Leto told Reuters after reaching his final destination of Los Angeles on Friday (April 6). He added "Listen, you put an album out, you have an opportunity. You can write a press release and send it out and have an album cover and it's neat and organized or you can throw caution to the wind and do something that's exciting, that's fun, that's unforgettable and have an experience and then share that with the world."
Leto admitted that the trip reminded him of the start of his career when he traveled across the States to fulfill his dream of becoming a director in Los Angeles. Now, the actor and musician is going full circle as he's directing a documentary connected to the album, "A Day in the Life of America" in which he explores the lives of different Americans on one day - Independence Day (July 4, 2017).
The quirky promotion for the album doesn't stop there. The band are also releasing different sleeves from the album, all of which list names of cultural value to the United States, like 'Kim, Justin, Jesus, Michael, Mickey, Donald'.
"For America, it's really hard to find one image that represents the country," said Leto. 'We decided to create these lists that are a bit like a time capsule. Individually they're artifacts, they're a little funny, fun or strange or provocative but together they give us a sense of the time we're living in."
The road trip experience wasn't lost on Leto. He described it as "very grounding" before adding "it just reminds you that we're all connected, that we all have our challenges, that we all have our dreams but that we're all connected." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
