- Story Text: Annual movie theater convention Cinemacon kicked off in Las Vegas on Monday (April 23) with Sony Pictures giving theater owners and press a taste of their upcoming slate.
Unlike film festivals, the convention, held annually and previously called Showest, is a place for studios to converse with movie theaters and showcase their talent and upcoming projects.
"This is the beginning," said Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey, who was there to launch a trailer for Sony's ''White Boy Rick'. He added, "We're sharing what we got and I'm happy to say we've got a great product. I've been a part of some films where I like them but I feel that I need to sell them or talk you into why you'd like them. Not this one. 'White Boy Rick' is a very, very, very good movie."
Director Antoine Fuqua, who was there with his project "The Equalizer 2" starring Denzel Washington, said “If people go to the movies, there's a lot of names up there, a lot of movies to go and see so it's important to be part of the whole business and not just one side of it. The other thing is to come and talk to people like yourself (the media), to have early conversations about the movie and get it out there and make sure people are aware of it."
Producer Joel Silver presented his new film "Superfly", a remake of the 1972 film of the same name. He said "To exhibitors, they have to know about your movie and be aware of it and you book the theaters and get the right terms and it's very important to be present here and have your movie available here."
Sony's slate included "White Boy Rick", "Miss Bala", another remake starring Gina Rodriguez and Anthony Mackie, "Superfly", "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" and "The Equalizer 2".
Claire Foy was also present to talk about her upcoming project "The Girl in the Spider's Web", a sequel to the film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" where she has taken over the role of Lisbeth Salander from Rooney Mara.
She said about taking on the role “In real life, it's was the worst possible choice. It was a really high profile character done before, no hiding. I mean, if I was a sensible person, I would have just slunk into the back of something and gone 'Ooh, I'm trying something else, I'm stretching my legs a bit' but instead like an absolute moron, I chose to go in for a kicking."
Cinemacon continues until Thursday April 26, during which time other major studios, including Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and Focus Features, will showcase their talent and upcoming productions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
