- Title: Rhodesia: Independence Crisis
- Date: 6th November 1964
- Summary: Sir Roy Welensky, former Federal Prime Minister, challenged the Government's handling of the independence issue and came out of retirement to fight a by-election. But his defeat by the Deputy Premier, Mr Dupont, gave Mr Smith a vote of confidence. Strict secrecy was imposed on the place where African chiefs met to give their decision. They agreed to independence under the present constitution. So did the qualified voters - overwhelmingly European - at the Referendum in November. African political leaders took no part: But one, Mr Nkomo, has since been released from prison. He is still under restriction, but free to see anyone who wishes to consult him. Note: The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was formed in 1953 and dissolved in 1963 and consisted of: Nyasaland - which became Malawi in 1963, Northern Rhodesia - which became Zambia in 1964 and Southern Rhodesia - which became Zimbabwe in 1980.
