- Story Text: Mexican presidential hopeful Ricardo Anaya has come into the election race on a unique platform, with a coalition that brings together his conservative National Action Party (PAN) with the left-leaning Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) for a shot at Los Pinos.
Anaya aged just 39 is one of Mexico's youngest presidential candidates. He joined the party as a law student and held several senior positions in the Queretaro state government between 2002 and 2009 before becoming president of the federal lower house in 2013.
During his time as lawmaker, he worked with the current administration of President Enrique Pena Nieto on reforms in the energy and education sectors of Mexico.
Now campaigning against the ruling PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party), his main proposals include an international commission to investigate the current government over corruption allegations as well as a universal minimum income.
He has also sought to use his youth as an edge in the campaign, talking up his fresh approach to politics and having rubbed shoulders with international leaders such as Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Most surveys have put Anaya in second place in the election race, at just over 20 percent. In the latest opinion poll, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador holds a nearly 17-point lead over his rival. Ruling party candidate Jose Antonio Meade stands at just over 17 percent in the latest poll. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
