Summary:Nairobi - December 12, 1964. President Jomo Kenyatta and his cabinet are sworn into office as Kenya becomes an independent republic. Kenyatta was to rule his country until his death in 1978 - and prove a model of political dexterity. Alone among the African states which came into being in the 1960's Kenya has remained stable, wealthy, multi-racial and politically independent.
