- Story Text:Before the Oscar nominations were announced in January, many critics thought that 2016 would be Ridley Scott's year as he has never won an Academy Award himself.
However, 'The Martian' director was locked out of the category and now the favorite appears to be Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. He has to date won the top award at the Directors Guild of America for 'The Revenant' and picked up the Best Director gong at The Golden Globes.
The Mexican director won two Oscars last year for his film 'Birdman' - Best Director and Best Picture.
Also in the category is Australian George Miller, who helmed the critically acclaimed 'Mad Max: Fury Road', which was launched at the Cannes film festival. Miller will be returning there later this year as President of the Jury. He won an Oscar in 2007 for the animated 'Happy Feet'.
Director Adam McKay has successfully made the leap from toiling behind the camera in Will Ferrell comedies to acclaimed director with his film 'The Big Short'. McKay is also nominated in the Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay category for the film about the US housing market crash in the mid-2000s.
'Spotlight''s Tom McCarthy is also up for Best Writing, Original Screenplay as well as director. He previously was nominated at the Academy Awards for writing the screenplay to the hit Pixar animation 'Up'.
Irish director Lenny Abrahamson rounds off the category for his film 'Room' about a young woman and her child living isolated from the outside world.
The Academy Awards will be held on February 28th in Los Angeles. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
