- Story Text: Members of a Palestinian dance troupe showcased their fancy footwork in Amman on Monday (July 23) in a dabke performance that highlights the traditional music and folklore of the Palestinian culture.
The one-day event is part of a tour by El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe around the region, marking 70 years since what the Palestinians call the Nakba (Catastrophe), when the founding of Israeli led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
The dance troupe was founded in 1979 by a group of artists who wanted to preserve and promote Palestinian tradition through music and dance.
Sixteen-year-old Tala Karaja, a young member of the group, said the Dabke dance is an important part of the country's culture.
"The Dabke reflects how strongly connected you are to being a Palestinian. It is part of our identity and our cause," she said.
For audience members, it was important to protect Palestinian culture, viewing Dabke as a way to reconnect with Palestinian roots.
"This group all came along with me from the (Hiteen refugee) camp. We are eager to see our heritage first, the reviving of our culture and also to support the sons and daughters of our country," said Hiyam Abu Sandal, a Palestinian refugee living in Jordan.
El-Funoun troupe is expected to perform in Lebanon later this week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
