- Story Text: Hundreds of thousands of people took part in Berlin's extravagant Christopher Street Day celebration on Saturday (July 28), marking the 40th anniversary of the country's biggest parade for gay and lesbian rights.
The German capital's streets overflowed with colour and music, from costumes to banners and signs. People basked in the sunshine, with temperatures reaching up to 32 degrees - a departure from the raincoats and umbrellas needed to revel last summer.
The annual event is not only a giant street party but is also aimed at promoting gay and lesbian rights.
Germany's parliament in June 2017 backed the legalisation of same-sex marriage in a historic vote, bringing the country into line with many other European nations including France, Britain and Spain.
Drag queen performer Pimmela von Doeschen told Reuters TV that LGBT rights still had a long way to go in Germany.
The parade commemorates the first Pride parade, held a year after the 1969 Stonewall Riots that were ignited following a police raid, propelling the long struggle to bring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people into the mainstream and guarantee their rights.
Over the years the event has evolved into LGBT Pride Month, with parades and street parties around the world that draw millions of people of every sexual orientation. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
