- Story Text: Pro-Russian separatists in self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic staged on Thursday (August 16) what they called large-scale scheduled artillery exercises in Ukraine's east where the conflict continues for the fourth year.
Around 300 rebel fighters took part in the drills which were focused on a defensive scenario according to which rebels had to repel the enemy's attack.
Dozens units of hardware, including armoured personnel carriers, mortar and self-propelled artillery vehicle, were involved in the drills.
According to the rebels commander, infantry and artillery divisions successfully fulfilled the tasks.
More than 10,000 people have been killed since Russia-backed insurgency erupted in Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions. A three-year-old Minsk peace agreement failed to stop fighting and each side accuses the other of violating the terms of ceasefire on a near-daily basis. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
