Summary:Civil war in the Dominican Republic in April when the ruling Junta which ousted President Bosch in 1963 was itself overthrown by the ex-President's supporters. Heavy fighting began almost immediately in Santo Domingo between the Bosch supporters led by Colonel Francisco Caamano & military units headed by Brigadier Wessin Y Wessin. Strong forces of American marines and parachute troops were sent to the Republic, to evacuate US Nationals. But they were soon involved in a number of skirmishes with Caamano's rebels. By the end of April the Americans had evacuated most of their nationals from Santo Domingo. Shortly after President Johnson said American forces were there to prevent the seizure of power by Communist and Castroist elements, the rebels accused the US of smashing a democratic revolution.
