Title:Dominican Republic: OAS Send Peacekeeping Force
Date:1st May 1965
Summary:In an effort to end the civil war an Inter-American peace force was established in May after negotiations by the Organisation of American States. 15,000 US troops still in the Republic became an integral part of the force. OAS negotiations, jeered by the rebels, but, in August the OAS persuaded the two opposing factions to sign an Act of Dominican Reconciliation and end the four-month civil war. In October the barricades started coming down. Fourteen hundred rebels left a part of Santo Domingo they'd occupied in the first step towards integrating the area with the rest of the city, and a new provisional Government, under Dr. Garcia-Godoy, was already planning elections for next year.
