Summary:In May, a team of surgeons at Turin were making final preparations to separate siamese twins. Six-year-olds Giuseppina and Santina Foglia, joined at the hip, had been undergoing medical test for weeks in preparation for the operation. After a difficult five-hour operation the children lay in separate beds for the first time. Mother and grandmother found the twins in much better condition than had been expected. In the weeks after the operation the children made remarkable progress. They were prepared for this moment by months of careful physical and mental therapy. Professor Luigi Solerio, the man behind a medical triumph, watched the twins enjoying the wonderful adventure of walking and standing on their own.
