- Story Text:Bono, the frontman of the Irish rock group U2, made his annual appearance at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland on Friday (January 22) where he participated in a panel on the 10th anniversary celebration of the (RED) campaign.
Bono has been lobbying for a variety of causes including debt relief, world poverty and AIDS.
Around 2,500 participants from more than 100 countries, including 1,500 business leaders and more than 40 heads of state and government, are meeting in the Swiss ski resort of Davos for the 46th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum from Jan 20-23.
Also present on Friday was Melinda Gates, whose Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest philanthropic funders of global health projects in poor countries, which spearheaded an international summit in London in 2012 aimed at making access to birth control a central part of health and development aid projects in developing countries.
The Gates foundation alone pledged $560 million, bringing donor funding pledges for the plan to $2.6 billion.
According to figures from the foundation, less than 20 percent of women in sub-Saharan Africa and barely a third of women in South Asia use modern contraceptives.
Facebook's Chief Operating Office Sheryl Sandberg was also present on Friday.
