Summary:The Australian aircraft carrier Sydney dropped anchor in Vung Tau, 40 miles south of Saigon, on June 8 1965, to disembark some 450 infantrymen from an Australian combat battalion sent to Vietnam to support South Vietnamese and American forces. The Australian Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, said in Washington this day that Australian forces were ready to fight alongside Americans to defend South Vietnam. But Australians were used mainly as support troops.
