Summary:Algiers on the morning of June 19 1965 - the government of President Ben Bella was overthrown by a military coup led by Colonel Houari Boumedienne. The absence of any reaction to the military take-over was attributed to the fact that a film on the battle of Algiers was being shot in the city at the time, a master-stroke of timing by Boumedienne. Ben Bella, denounced as a diabolical dictator, was never seen again in the political arena.
