- Story Text: Actor Sylvester Stallone says he did not expect to win a Golden Globe award for reprising his iconic role as boxer Rocky Balboa in "Creed.''
The 69-year-old actor received a standing ovation as he won best supporting film actor at the 73rd ceremony in LA at the weekend.
Speaking a few days later on Tuesday (January 12) while on the red carpet in London for the European premiere of 'Creed' he said:
''I didn't expect to win, I didn't expect to be there, the last time I was there was maybe 1977, there was maybe 10 tables and it was indoors, it wasn't televised - it was surreal for me - here is my wife my three kids - and Rocky, he just comes through.''
His co-stars Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson were delighted for him.
''Oh my god it was amazing just to be there, like for in centre, to see him achieve that award, something he has worked so hard for, something he hasn't had a chance to see in really long time it's been 40 years since he has been in that room so I am very proud of him.'' Jordan said.
While Thompson said:
''I know we are so excited for him, so proud and it's so cute because he really legitimately was so floored. I know sometimes people say that they are surprised - but he really was so it was very very sweet.''
Stallone's performance in 1977's 'Rocky' - the first film in the franchise - won him nominations at the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards and the Baftas - but he failed to scoop any of the gongs.
Now almost 40 years later, he has won a Golden Globe and will find out this week if he is an Oscar contender. Certainly Jordan thinks he is worthy of a nomination.
''I think he deserves it I definitely I think it's an incredible performance so honest, so vulnerable - and I think he definitely deserves it,'' said Jordan.
''Creed'' is the story of Adonis Johnson, the son of Balboa rival-turned-mentor Apollo Creed, who leaves behind a life of privilege to walk in the footsteps of a father he never knew. Played by Michael B. Jordan, Johnson is so determined to box he tracks down Stallone's famed character Rocky Balboa and convinces him to be his mentor.
29-year-old filmmaker Ryan Coogler wrote and directed ''Creed'' - which takes the Rocky film saga in a new direction.
''Ryan Cooger is a genius, he really is because you took something that lacked the element of surprise people know Rocky and they go 'oh' you know so when you hear about it their eyes roll they're going again but that's the magic of what he pulled off,'' Stallone told Reuters.
Coogler grew up watching Rocky movies with his father and explained it was his relationship with his dad that inspired him to come up with the story.
As well as helping Johnson come to terms with living in his famous father's shadow, it is not long before Rocky has him in the ring. With no stunt double, Jordan did all his own boxing moves - even when faced with real life boxer and actor Tony Bellew.
Tessa Thompson, who plays Johnson's love interest and up and coming musician Bianca, was impressed.
''He's (Michael B. Jordan) incredibly brave, he is fighting all real fighters in the movie like Tony and he never let anyone else put on his shorts so he has no stunt double and of course Sly was like 'if you really want to be inducted into the family you have to take a hit or two' so he did there is footage of it and it's incredible I was on set that day worried about him, he took a hit or two I was very proud of him,'' she said.
British boxing champion Bellew plays one of Jordan's key opponents 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan.
''To boxers like me growing up - Rocky Balboa and the Rocky franchise is like the bible and I watched the bible every other day, so, growing up I was a huge Rocky fan - I was a huge Rambo fan too so working alongside the great Sylvester Stallone was a dream come true,'' he said.
British professional boxer Carl Froch was also at the premiere and explained how influential 'Rocky' was for him.
''I think so - Sylvester Stallone well Rocky Balboa as he is known on screen certainly inspired me through hard times of training when you have got to dig deep you think about Rocky running and fighting Apollo Creed,'' said the former WBA and IBF world super-middleweight champion.
