Summary:On August 9 1965, the island city of Singapore seceded from the Malaysian Federation to become an independent state. The federation of Singapore, Malaya and Sarawak had been formed only two years earlier but Singapore's decision to go it alone followed racial tension on the island and other difficulties which the governments of Singapore and Malaya were unable to resolve.
