Summary:The Los Angeles suburb of Watts - a predominantly black neighbourhood - was the scene of a week of violent rioting in the hot summer of 1965. On August 13 that year, the death toll had risen to 32 as the black ghetto exploded into arson, looting and shooting. Thousands of National Guardsmen and police fought with rioters before the situation could be brought under control and the cost of this week of destruction could be counted.
