- Story Text:Chelsea have demolished second divsion pretenders Gillingham 5-0 in the English FA Cup to set a semifinal against Premiership rivals Newcaslte United. Gillingham's dream of reaching the last four of the English FA Cup ended on Sunday (February 20) at Stamford Bridge, where they were convincingly beaten by Chelsea, who had Italian Gianfranco Zola back as captain. The visitors who had previously eliminated top division sides Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday resisted only 17 minutes before Chelsea opened the floodgates. Uurugyayan Gustavo Poyet was clever to steal the ball and sent a perfect cross for Norwegian international Tore Andre Flo to head Chelsea in front. Gillingham, playing in the quarter-finals for the first time in their history, had a good opportunity soon aftewards but their top scorer Mark Thompson could not find the target. The visitors could only watch as the assemble of international stars including French World Cup captain Didier Deschamps and with George Weah combined to cause more danger to their second division opponents. Chelsea, who last won the FA Cup in 1997, increased their advantage as youngster John Terry rose to a corner from Zola to make it 2-0, five minutes after the break. The combination Deschamps-Weah finally worked as the Ghananian ran to a clever pass from the Frenchman to add another goal for Chelsea, just a minute later. Young midfielder Jordi Morris was tripped inside the area by Marcus Browning and referee Paul Durkin did not hesistate at pointing to the spot. Gianfranco Zola stepped in to end a goal drought that had lasted exactly four months to the day, with an 86th-minute penalty. Morris was rewarded for his efforts, wrapping up the 5-0 victory a minute from time, sending Chelsea to their eighth major semifinal in the last seven seasons.
