Summary:An attempted coup against President Sukarno of Indonesia, was crushed by loyal troops, but not before six generals, including the army chief of staff, General Jani, were murdered by the insurgents. By Mid-October, responsibility for the coup had been placed by the government on the Indonesian Communist party, PKI. Communist premises and property including the Chinese University in Djakarta - were sacked and burned by infuriated crowds. President Sukarno declared a state of war in Central and East Java where armed resistance to the Government was being organised Communists and Communist suspects were rounded up and taken to Djakarta. In the Garrison there, Colonel Untung, leader of the abortive coup, was being held prisoner. Army leaders said Communists still threatened the Nation's security.
