- Story Text:- INTRO: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Pig, two boars who became British national heroes after escaping from an abattoir more than a week ago, have both now been captured. The second little runaway pig, Sundance, was captured on Friday (January 16), after being driven from its hiding place by gun dogs and felled with a tranquilliser dart. RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Officer David Hide said the pig was in "good health," and was being examined by the local vet Fran Baird. The famous fugitives' escapade began eight days ago when they fled from an abattoir by scuttling under a fence and swimming an icy river to freedom. Butch was captured on Thursday but Sundance refused to go quietly. It took eight people and two dogs and three attempts with the tranquilliser dart to capture and subdue the pig. RSPCA marksman Mike Harley said that the pig had been driven out of a thicket by two men with dogs. It was then shot with a tranquilliser dart and carried to a vehicle for transfer to Baird's surgery. The two pigs' feats have saved their bacon. They will be spared the butcher's knife and will spend the rest of their days at an animal sanctuary instead. The mission to save Butch and Sundance had become a public obsession in animal-worshipping Britain where the film "Babe" -- about a talking piglet -- was a smash hit. Television stations hired helicopters to fly over fields and thickets. Newspapers offered four-figure rewards to pig bounty hunters. Animal sanctuaries promised safe haven. The Vegetarian Society pleaded with Britons to stop eating their beloved bacon for breakfast and roast pork for the traditional Sunday lunch.
