Summary:Within a week of the Commonwealth Conference in Lagos, in January, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and two regional premiers had been killed and the Federal Government overthrown. Tribal unrest and rioting has dogged Nigeria for much of the year. Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi, who headed the National Military Government, was himself overthrown in July, and replaced by Colonel Yakubu Gowon. Colonel Gowon is seen here with Chief Awolowo, one of several leading Nigerians whom he released from prison. Hundreds of thousands of Ibos left the Northern Region after riots in the Autumn that cost at least a thousand lives. Many of the refugees arrived in Eastern Nigeria badly wounded.
