A Japanese tourist and his Colombian paragliding instructor were killed in Colombia on Wednesday (October 28) after they lost control of the paraglider they were flying in and crashed into a mountainside in the western department of Narino.
Eduardo Humberto Paredes Bravo, a 48-year-old paragliding instructor from Colombia and Naoki Kimura, a 34-year-old Japanese national were killed on impact.
Colonel Javier Perez from the Pasto Metropolitan Police said it was the Japanese man's first time doing an extreme sport.
"The death of the Japanese national, Kimura Naoki, who was 34 years old and had arrived via Ecuador, he had been staying in Chachagui and it was apparently his first time participating in this extreme sport," he said, mixing up the Japanese man's first and last names.
Authorities said a combination of strong winds and a language communication difficulties probably led to the fatal crash.
"The event happened due to a strong wind, we have also been told that there were language communication difficulties between the Japanese man and Colombian instructor, they didn't understand each other regarding the instructions, he got nervous, the strong wind blew them towards the mountain and unfortunately they crashed against it and they died on impact," said Perez.
The department of Narino is located in western Colombia, bordering Ecuador and the Pacific Ocean. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
