- Story Text: The iconic Igor Moiseyev Ballet is running to a packed house in the Jordanian capital Amman.
Among the highlights of the performance is an interpretation of belly dancing.
The 70-year old company is often acclaimed as one of the world's greatest folk dance groups, its choreography often derived from folk styles from around the world.
"This group was founded in the 40's, so it's a prestigious company, and they are focused on cultural arts from around the world. Igor Moiseyev, who passed away in 2007, had choreographed more than 200 dances that reflect cultures and traditions from around the world, and the dances have become well-known worldwide," said Lina al-Tal, the director of Amman's National Centre for Culture and Arts.
The company's origin can be traced back to 1936, when Igor Moiseyev, former principal dancer and choreographer of the Bolshoi Ballet, was asked by the Soviet government to organise the first Festival of National Dance.
Moiseyev's aim was to bring traditional dances to national attention. His choreography found great success in Russia, and the group began performing internationally.
Since then, the company has performed countless times in more than 65 countries around the world.
Artistic director of the ballet, Elena Shcherbakova, said she was eager to see how the Jordanian audience would react to their award-winning ballet.
"Today we bring the first ballet that was done in our company, the Prince Igor dance, music by Alexander Borodin, and for us it's very interesting how the audience in Amman will (be) impressed (with) this ballet, because the premier of this ballet was in 1971 in Paris, and all the company received a special medal, Triumph Prince Igor dancers of Igor Moiseyev. It's a great choreography," she said.
The audience was captivated as dancers in colourful costumes from various cultures and traditions took to the stage.
The group had previously performed in Amman in 2012, to wide acclaim.
The current show will run till Monday (October 26) at the Cultural Palace in Amman. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
