Summary:In South Vietnam, a state of near civil war developed in the spring. Buddhists demanding civilian government joined forces with local troops in Da Nang in revolt against the central authorities. There was stiff fighting before they were driven from their strongholds in Buddhist pagodas. A series of ritual suicides followed. Nine Buddhist monks and nuns burned themselves to death in one week.
