- Story Text: Just steps from the U.S. Mexican border, the Mexican army shut down an outdoor lab on Tuesday (August 28) that was producing some 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of crystal meth a day, officials said.
The lab was located just outside of the Mexican border town of La Rumorosa, some 50 miles (80 km) away from Jacumba Hot Springs, California in the United States.
The lab is thought to have been operating for roughly a year.
According to reports, the lab was run by ten people, who fled before the police arrived on the scene.
Mexico is a major supplier of methamphetamine to the United States and is the top source of heroin, which is fueling a surge in opioid addiction. The country is also the principal highway for cocaine trafficked north.
Just earlier this month, Mexican marines discovered an underground drug lab in the mountains outside the capital of Sinaloa state along the Pacific state where they destroyed 50 tons of methamphetamine. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
