- Story Text: Aretha Franklin's body lay in repose for a second day on Wednesday (August 29) while her soaring voice poured out from loudspeakers outside a Detroit museum, stirring fans to sway and sing along and others to weep as they lined up for a last glimpse of the Queen of Soul.
Franklin died last week at the age of 76 from pancreatic cancer in Detroit, where she began her career as a child singing gospel in the New Bethel Baptist Church choir.
Harry Green, 70, saw her sing in that church and remembers her powerful voice.
"(It's) just like you lost a sister, like you lost a friend, you know, somebody you grew up with all your life, you know, just, like, she's gone, you know," he said.
Brenda England, 64, traveled from Cincinnati, Ohio for the visitation at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
"It was very emotional. The whole thing is very emotional. You know, somebody that's been around, never met the lady personally, but feel a connection you wouldn't believe," she said.
Franklin's body was displayed in an open, gold-plated casket that glowed beneath the grand rotunda's glass dome ceiling. In a change of outfit from the previous day, she wore powder blue gown and blue high-heeled shoes, her legs crossed at the feet.
Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson, Ronald Isley and Stevie Wonder, among others, are due to sing at her funeral on Friday (August 31) at Detroit's Greater Grace Temple. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
