- Story Text: Many students at schools across Japan like Ikebukurohoncho Primary School in Tokyo took part in earthquake simulation drills on Friday (August 31), just one day ahead of the 95th anniversary of the Great Kanto earthquake.
Children were required to first crouch under their desks upon hearing the alarm and then assemble in the school's outdoor track. The drill, which was cut short to 15 minutes due to a heatwave in Tokyo, is part of Japan's nationwide Disaster Prevention Day. Disaster Prevention Day officially falls on Saturday (September 1) but many schools and businesses across Japan chose to hold their drills today instead.
Ikebukurohoncho Primary School principal Toshiharu Nakamaru said the school wanted to teach students to learn be prepared in the event of a natural disaster because they can happen at any moment in Japan.
Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries and it carries out disaster drills every year on September 1, the anniversary of a massive earthquake in 1923 that killed at least 100,000 people, devastating Tokyo. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
