- Story Text: Director Luca Guadagnino on Sunday (September 2) likened the process of making his latest movie "Suspiria" to turning milk into yoghurt.
"Suspiria" is a remake of the gory 1977 cult classic of the same name by Italian director Dario Argento.
Guadagnino, who made the acclaimed "Call Me by Your Name", said it was up to audiences to decipher how loyal to original source material his film was.
"I wish the movie to be able to say by itself what is that the film by Dario has been literally taken into it and what has been used as an inspiration," he said.
"Suspiria" follows Susie, an ingenue American played by Dakota Johnson, excited but daunted as she arrives to study at the prestigious dance school where strange older women seem to have supernatural control over the girls.
Another key character in the remake is elderly psychiatrist Jozef Klemperer, played by an unknown actor Lutz Ebersdorf, and there are rumours he is actually co-star Tilda Swinton in disguise.
Ahead of the film's world premiere on Saturday (September 1), Swinton, known for her remarkable physical transformations in films, read out a message from Ebersdorf, supposedly an 82-year-old retired performance artist and psychoanalyst, who chose not to attend the Venice Film Festival.
Ebersdorf's only credit on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is for "Suspiria", the remake of Dario Argento's bloody classic from 1977, and in the statement read out by Swinton, he says he has no plans to make other movies.
Long-time collaborators Swinton and Guadagnino said "having fun" was always at the centre of their work.
Johnson denied rumours that filming the gory "Suspiria" had sent her into psychoanalysis, but admitted it had had some impact.
"Yeah it is normal. I'm not ashamed of it at all. I find that I evolve emotionally and psychologically and intellectually when I figure out why I do things, why you feel things. I guess it's not a very European thing to go to therapy. And that's great too. But I like it because I learn a lot," she said.
Preparing for the film's tightly-choreographed dance scenes took a physical toll, Johnson said. The actress said she took dancing lessons on the side while shooting "Fifty Shades Freed" in Vancouver, Canada. Her co-star Mia Goth, meanwhile, admitted to having "two left feet" and flying to Italy well in advance to work on her dancing skills.
Actress Chloe Grace Moretz does not appear in the dance scenes but was nonetheless faced with physical challenges.
"I had so many prosthetics. Those were all prosthetics so I had eight and a half hours of prosthetics every day, full body prosthetics with my saggy boobies, I had like full fake saggy boobies and like a saggy bum with my entrails falling out. It was tiring. It was good though, it was funny," she said.
The 21-year-old who recently starred in "The Miseducation of Cameron Post" and who is next headed to Toronto to premiere "Greta", said she felt she was on the right track after taking time off to reassess her ambitions.
"It's the perfect step forward in this next iteration of my career and who I want to be as a young adult. You know this is the Chloe that I'm proud of and these are the projects that are, out of the over 60 films I've done over the last 15 years I would say these are the ones that I'm thus far most proud of," said Moretz, who has featured in more than 60 movies.
