- Story Text: Republican U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter arrived at the Edward J. Schwartz courthouse in San Diego on Tuesday (September 4) surrounded by media and being heckled by protesters.
The politician, who is accused of misusing $250,000 in campaign funds, was in court to apply for his and his wife's next court appearance to be waived, which the presiding judged did not agree to.
Hunter, an early supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, is the second Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives to face criminal charges this month. On Aug. 8, U.S. Representative Christopher Collins of New York was charged with taking part in an insider trading scheme. Collins, who has suspended his re-election campaign, has called the charges baseless.
Protesters gathered together outside chanting 'Hunter's got to go' and holding placards saying 'One Nation under Fraud' and 'Sometimes a Witchhunt catches Witches'.
The highly detailed indictment by a grand jury in San Diego alleged that the Hunters used campaign accounts to pay for their children's private school tuition, lavish travel including a trip to Italy and restaurant meals that frequently cost hundreds of dollars. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
