- Story Text: Slovenian police said on Thursday (September 17) they would return to Croatia some 150 refugees and migrants on a train from Croatia halted at the Dobova train station on the Slovenian side of the border.
The people have been locked on the train for hours and their initial relief of being able to continue their onward journey to Germany has now dissolved into desperation and frustration.
"Merkel, Merkel" the people cried as they hung out of the train windows.
"Freedom, freedom" they chanted, calling for water.
Several people tried to climb out of the train through the windows and were escorted back onboard and the train doors locked. Some tried again and the Slovenian police were seen handcuffing one man and leading him away, he was later released.
"We will return them (the migrants) to Croatia in the shortest time possible," Anton Stubljar, from Novo Mesto police administration, told reporters.
This is the largest group of refugees that has tried to enter Slovenia since the refugee crisis erupted in Europe, police statistics show.
The Slovenian government said on Monday it would not allow illegal migrants to pass through Slovenia but it would enable them to ask for asylum. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
