- Story Text: Pakistan held a number of military demonstrations and ceremonies on Thursday (September 6) to mark the country's Defence Day, which commemorates the lives lost in a war against India in 1965.
On the beach of the port city of Karachi, hundreds of spectators gathered to watch Pakistan's navy demonstrate a series of manoeuvres, including a coordinated assault on hostage-takers, a fly pass, and a paratrooper display.
"Today's demonstration is to show that even today our nation is ready to fight with the same sentiment (as they did in 1965)," said a paratrooper, Qaiser Rassaq.
At the army's General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa joined senior civilian and military leaders, veteran families, politicians, lawmakers and celebrities for a ceremony.
Both India and Pakistan claim victory in the 1965 war - the second fought between the two neighbours over the disputed region of Kasmir. It ended in a ceasefire on September 6 and returned to the front lines that predated the conflict. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
