- Story Text: Members of the international team behind the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand were awarded royal medals on Friday (September 7).
As many as 372 Thai and foreign divers and volunteers received the awards for their role in a dramatic and highly dangerous mission that gripped the world for more than two weeks. Thailand's Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha distributed pins and medals during a ceremony at Government House in Bangkok.
The event came a day after thousands of people attended a royal dinner party at Bangkok's Royal Plaza, a large public square in the heart of city's old quarter, to celebrate the boys' rescue. The team, known as the Wild Boars, were guests of honour.
The boys and their 25-year-old coach, Ekapol Chanthawong, were exploring Chiang Rai's Tham Luang cave on June 23 when they became trapped. They survived nine days on water dripping from rocks before they were discovered on a muddy mound by divers. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
