- Story Text: A Peruvian appeals court on Saturday (September 8) ordered the release from preventive detention of a Chilean married couple, while dismissing child trafficking charges against the pair.
The decision was made after DNA test results came back positive showing suspect Jorge Tovar had acted as a surrogate parent to twins born in Peru.
In a public hearing in Callao, the court ordered the immediate release of the couple Jorge Tovar and Rosario Madueno, who were jailed in Callao.
"The investigated Jorge Arnaldo Tovar Perez and Rosario de los Angeles Madueno Atalaya who are both currently detained at the Sarita Colonia of Callao and Ancon 1 prisons will wait for a letter today to be sent to the directors of the before mentioned prisons, requesting their immediate release," said appeals Judge, Orlando Tapia.
Upon leaving court, the father of the accused man, Jorge Tovar, said they always knew their son was innocent.
"We knew that all this is now back to normal. It was confirmed and our conscience was clear in a way but we have suffered after two weeks of uncertainty."
According to local media, the couple will continue to be subject to further investigations and will not be able to return to Chile for the time being. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
