- Story Text: Arab and international countries have increased their financial aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), chief of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboulgheit told a news conference on Tuesday (September 11).
Aboulgheit was speaking after meeting with Arab foreign ministers in Cairo, where they discussed the future of UNRWA's operations after the United States announced it would pull over $200 million in funding to the organisation.
UNRWA's Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl, who attended the meeting, urged Arab states to increase and deliver the pledges they made to support the more than 500 thousand Palestinian refugees the organisation supports.
Three Gulf States have announced a total of $150 million in funding for UNRWA this year, and other countries have made new or increased contributions as the agency scrambles to continue operating. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
