- Story Text:Bank whistleblower Herve Falciani on Tuesday (September 11) said he had played a key role in helping other European jurisdictions reveal tax frauds and justified his cooperation with Spanish courts to reject an extradition request from Switzerland.
The Spanish court is considering an extradition request from Switzerland over alleged industrial sabotage nears a decision.
Falciani, a French citizen who worked for HSBC's Swiss private bank, in 2008 leaked details of thousands of clients, many of whom he suspected were using their accounts to evade tax at home - information that sparked investigations in several countries.
Hailed as a hero by some, Swiss courts sentenced him in absentia to five years in jail.
Judicial sources expect the judge to issue a ruling on the extradition request in the next days or weeks.
The Spanish prosecutor Teresa Sandoval said it was against the extradition request partly because the facts included in the Swiss ruling are not considered a crime in Spain. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
