- Story Text: Indonesian President Joko Widodo likened recent trade disputes to Marvel's 'Infinity War" during a speech at the opening of a World Economic Forum event in Hanoi on Wednesday (September 12).
"What is happening in the world economy today is that we are heading toward infinity war. Not since the great depression of the 1930s have trade wars erupted with the intensity that they have today. But rest assured I and my fellow avengers stand ready to prevent Thanos from wiping out half the world population," he said as some in attendance cheered at the reference.
Leaders of Southeast Asian nations also voiced their support for multilateral pacts at the World Economic Forum event.
Even so, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he was not sure if there would be an agreement this year on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade pact, which includes the 10 ASEAN countries plus China, Australia, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.
Singapore's trade minister earlier this month said nations were aiming to reach broad agreement on the pact at a leaders’ summit in the city-state in November, six years after talks began. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
