Even if she was eight, she's a great actress so (laughs). In the beginning I was a little bit stressed by that because I didn't know how to handle the fact that she was eight, how to be with her." - Story Text: French actor Vincent Lacoste admits he was a bit scared to take on the central character in director Mikhael Hers' touching drama, ''Amanda'', which sees him play a young man struggling to come to terms with the sudden death of his sister.
Lacoste, who made his acting debut at 15 years-old, starring in "The French Kissers" in 2009, is known for comedies including "Hippocrates: Diary of a French Doctor" and "Astérix and Obélix: God Save Britannia".
Speaking to Reuters last Saturday (Sept. 1) in Venice, where his film was screened in the Orizzonti section of the festival, Lacoste said his latest role turned out fine in the end, despite his initial reservations.
''I was like whoa, that's a tough thing but actually, I don't know, I identified myself in the character because yeah, he lost his sister ... in the beginning, he's a normal guy. He's a young guy, he's working a little bit, not so much. He doesn't know what he will do in life," he said.
Lacoste plays David, who finds himself having to take care for his young niece, Amanda (Isaure Multrier), after her mum - his sister - is killed in a terror attack. Rather than focus on the incident Hers chooses to concentrate on how those left behind manage to mourn and carry on with life.
''The character of David carries the movie. We travel through the film with him, his love story, the story with his sister and of course the relation with that child,'' Hers told Reuters.
Nine-year-old newcomer Isaure Multrier said seeing herself on the big screen for the first time ''felt really weird'' and she realised she's ''quite different from Amanda.''
While Multrier said her friends and family were impressed with her film role, Lacoste was also full of praise for her acting ability. He said that she was quite easy to act around as she was so natural.
As well as the relationship between David and Amanda, Hers' drama also shows David's blossoming new romance with Lena (Stacey Martin) and his attempt to reconnect with his estranged mother.
"It's a very modern film. It's a film of today," Martin told Reuters. "I think there's a lot of luminosity - even though there's a tragedy in it. I think it gives a lot of hope."
