- Story Text: Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike marked the start of the relocation of the old aging Tsukiji market on Thursday (September 13) after the new Toyosu market received the final go ahead from the government and was declared safe from the toxic contaminants that plagued its construction.
The soil at Toyosu, which was formerly a Tokyo Gas Co. production plant, had been contaminated with toxic chemicals including benzene and cyanogen, a discovery that ignited public concern about the environmental safety of the man-made area, two kilometres south of Tsukiji and adjacent to Tokyo Bay.
The Tokyo government was forced to take additional decontamination measures which delayed the market relocation - planned in order to clear the way for a road needed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic - by two years.
Tsukiji draws tens of thousands of visitors a year to its warren of stalls laden with exotic species of fish, huge tuna and fresh sushi, part of a tourism boom that is a key part of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic plan.
The new market will officially open on October 11, and will sell fish, fruit and vegetables. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
