- Story Text:President Enrique Pena Nieto heralded in Mexico's Independence Day celebrations in the capital's main square on Saturday (September 15), alongside tens of thousands of Mexicans who thronged into the Zocalo.
Shortly before midnight, President Enrique Pena Nieto gave the famous cry of the call to arms, known as "El Grito," in Mexico City.
"Viva Mexico!" is a contemporary twist on rebel priest Miguel Hidalgo's original call to arms in 1810. Mexicans eventually achieved their independence from Spain in 1821.
For Mexicans, Independence Day is a chance to reflect on the rich history and cultural diversity of the nation.
This is Pena Nieto's last time leading Independence Day celebrations in the Zocalo, with his presidency due to finish in December. He will make way for leftist president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
