- Story Text:Thousands of train commuters in Hong Kong experienced overcrowding and severe disruption on Monday (September 17) as the city returned to work just a day after it was battered by one of the strongest typhoons in recent years.
Super Typhoon Mangkhut left over 600 roads across Hong Kong blocked by trees according to the transportation department. With most bus services closed, people poured into subway stations. Some stations had hundreds of people lining up and waiting in the station lobby.
Stranded commuters said they were unsure of where to queue for the train services and complained of not getting to work in time, while workers leaving the central business district said having a day off would help give them time to clean up the wreckage left behind by the storm.
Mangkhut, with hurricane-force winds well over 200 kilometres per hour (124 miles/h), had barrelled past the northern tip of the Philippines, before skirting the south of Hong Kong and the neighbouring gambling hub of Macau. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
