- Story Text: Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz meeting in Rome with the Italian prime minister said on Tuesday (September 18) both countries agreed it is necessary to avoid a hard Brexit.
European Union leaders will discuss how to wind up negotiations with Britain on its withdrawal from the EU when they meet in Austria on Thursday (September 20), said summit chair Donald Tusk speaking in Brussels.
Kurz said British Prime Minister Theresa May would be given the opportunity to present her views during the summit but then the EU 27 leaders would meet for discussions without her.
Warning there was still a risk that talks could collapse, European Council President Tusk said a summit lunch in Salzburg, once May has left, would be briefed by EU negotiator Michel Barnier. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
