- Story Text: Following her role in the ABBA musical box office smash "Mama Mia! Here We Go Again," pop diva Cher is releasing an album of the Swedish pop group's hits.
The album, 'Dancing Queen,' features Cher's interpretations of ten of the band's songs, including 'SOS,' 'Waterloo,' 'Mamma Mia,' and the title track, disco favorite 'Dancing Queen.'
"Everyone said do not do 'Mamma Mia' and do not do 'Waterloo' because they're just too famous and you're not going to be able to get away with it," Cher told Reuters. "And I went, nah, I love them, I don't care how famous they are, I'm just going to do them, because I want to do them, because I want to be able to sing them."
Cher, who played the glamorous mother of Meryl Streep's character, Donna, in the hit film, said the seed was planted to make the album after she performed 'Fernando' in one of the scenes.
"I did 'Fernando' and then I did, you know, the opening to 'Super Trooper,' so that was, somehow, it came from that, but not that I knew. You know, I was finished. I was going to go off on vacation and I just thought that might be a cool thing to do," she said.
As well as embarking on a U.S. tour in support of the album in January, the chart-topper is also co-producing an upcoming Broadway musical, 'The Cher Show,' based on her life, which opens on December 3. It hasn't been easy, she said, to watch an interpretation of her life story play out on stage.
"It's not fun at all. And the more honest you are, the worse it is. First time I saw it, I just walked out. Actually, it wasn't the actual musical, it was just people reading it. And I just went, this is not my life. This is just not my life. And I got up and walked out," she said.
'Dancing Queen' will be available on September 28 via Warner Bros. Records. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
