- Story Text: Nicaraguan migrants are camping out in Costa Rica's capital of San Jose, fleeing instability and violence during widespread protests against President Daniel Ortega.
According to the Costa Rican government, about 100 to 150 Nicaraguans are crossing the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua regularly. San Jose has sought international help to deal with the influx.
The uptake in Nicaraguan migrants has put a strain on local services and shelters.
Nicaragua has been wracked by protest violence since April against the Ortega government. Proposed cuts to the pension system announced in the spring triggered months of protests that have expanded to encompass a range of concerns against Ortega, a former guerrilla leader whom critics accuse of tampering with elections and seeking to install a "family dictatorship."
Some 300 people have died so far during protest violence in Nicaragua. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
