I am asking for the government to make sure that those employed to look after the ferries do not overload the vessels and pay attention to the aspect of overloading." I thank God, because I was able to jump out of the ferry and held onto an object nearby and that is how I survived." (SOUNDBITE) (Swahili) SURVIVOR, CHARLES NGARIMA, SAYING: "The ferry overturned very fast and covered us, I was lucky that I was able to swim underwater while not knowing where I was swimming to, I knew I was very near the ferry. As I was trying to swim to safety, a number of metal bars cut my face and the back of my head." - Story Text: Divers on Saturday (September 22) recovered bodies from the wreck of an overcrowded Tanzanian ferry that capsized on Lake Victoria on Thursday (September 20), as the death toll grows.
Bodies continued to float to the surface around the vessel, which initial estimates suggested was carrying more than 300 people.
Dozens of relatives stood crying by the shoreline as they waited for information on their loved ones. Coffins were lined up nearby awaiting bodies being pulled from the vessel, which lay belly up in the water just metres from the shoreline.
Survivor Charles Ngarima told Reuters the ferry, which sank just a few metres from the dock on Ukerewe, the lake's biggest island, overturned very fast and he survived because he was able to swim underwater. He suffered several cuts to the face and head while scrambling to reach safety.
Divers rescued a man from the wreck of the ferry who was rushed to hospital, a Reuters witness said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
