- Story Text: A famed Palestinian teenager released from prison by Israel in July said that Palestinians will not give up their right to Jerusalem as their capital.
Ahed Tamimi, 17, became a symbol of Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation after serving eight months in prison and her case drew global attention.
On Saturday (September 22) speaking at a Communist Youth festival in Athens, she called on supporters to unite and take action against "occupation and colonisation".
The status of Jerusalem - home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions - is one of the biggest obstacles to any peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
The Palestinians have refused to participate in a U.S. peace effort since December when U.S. President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital and then moved the U.S. embassy there.
They claim East Jerusalem for the capital of an independent state they seek. Israel says Jerusalem is its eternal and indivisible capital.
"We want to deliver a message from here to (U.S. President Donald) Trump that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Palestine and that we will hold on to our principles," Tamimi said.
Tamimi also spoke in France last week, her first trip to the country since her release from prison.
On the sideline of the conference in Nantes, she said she intends to elevate the voice of her people around the world, using the international media coverage that is focused on her imprisonment.
Tamimi served a prison term for kicking and slapping an Israeli soldier in the occupied West Bank last December, outside her home in Nabi Saleh.
Her village has for years campaigned against land seizures by Israel, leading to confrontations with the Israeli military and Jewish settlers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
