- Story Text: Russia unveiled its second-generation driverless bus ready to hit the roads of Moscow, its developers said on Wednesday (September 26).
The new electric shuttle bus created by KAMAZ truck manufacturer together with Russian "NAMI" Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute is able to move autonomously but needs extra control from the operations centre for safety reasons, its manufacturers say.
The bus is expected to use the 5G new generation network to navigate and to connect to an operations control centre to monitor its movement.
"The operations control centre will receive information from all driverless cars about the condition of the cars, about road traffic situations, and various unexpected emergency situations. This is why we need fail-safe connection. If the connection is lost, the bus would stop and would not move - this is essential from the point of view of safety," KAMAZ Manufacturing Company representative and two times Dakar rally champion Firdaus Kabirov told the journalists on Wednesday.
The shuttle can carry 12 people and speed up to 110 kph (68 mph). Passengers will be able to operate doors, choose stops where they want to get out and use USB ports to charge electronic devices.
Manufacturers have big expectations saying they have already signed an agreement with Moscow city authorities to help create a network of driverless public transport in the streets of Russian capital. However, the country is yet to come up with proper legislation regulating self-driving transportation. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
