- Story Text: About 2000 Spanish unity supporters demonstrated in central Barcelona on Sunday (October 7) in front of the regional government headquarters led by the leader of the 'Ciudadanos Party', Albert Rivera.
The pro-unity 'Ciudadanos Party' accuses the Socialist government of being soft on the pro-independence regional Catalan government led by Quim Torra and has demanded that Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez call a general election as soon as possible.
Sanchez was catapulted to power when his party tabled a no confidence vote on Spain's previous Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy over a corruption scandal involving his People's Party.
"The only thing we need is to change Spain's government and get a government with a strong majority that will make sure the constitution is followed," Rivera said. "After this black week of violence, more than ever we have to say no to violence and yes to the constitution," he added.
Tensions in Catalonia ran high on October 1 when separatists commemorated the ill-fated, banned referendum of Oct. 1, 2017 and Catalan riot police clashed with independence supporters who tried to force their way into the regional parliament.
Throughout the day, separatists had protested, blocking roads, motorways and train tracks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
